According to a new analysis from Rhodium Group, China has established leadership positions in multiple strategic areas of artificial intelligence development, outpacing both the United States and other advanced G7 economies in key technological domains. The findings highlight the competitive dynamics shaping the global AI landscape, where technological capabilities are distributed unevenly across different segments of the innovation chain.

Despite these gains, China remains constrained in semiconductor design and manufacturing—a critical foundational layer for AI systems. This limitation underscores the complex nature of technological competition, where dominance in one area does not necessarily translate to comprehensive advantage across the entire AI technology stack. Reva Goujon, a director at Rhodium Group and co-author of the report, emphasized these nuanced trade-offs during a recent discussion on Bloomberg's coverage of US-China technology competition.
