Citadel, the prominent hedge fund led by Ken Griffin, has moved swiftly to reduce its exposure following its acquisition of a stock portfolio from Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund helmed by Leopold Aschenbrenner. According to Bloomberg Markets, Citadel has already offloaded more than 80 percent of the aggregate risk associated with the acquired holdings in less than a month.
The rapid risk reduction reflects Citadel's cautious approach to the troubled fund's positions, particularly as Situational Awareness has faced mounting challenges. By transferring the majority of the portfolio's risk exposure to other market participants, Citadel appears to be shedding the downside exposure while potentially retaining select positions or upside potential from the acquisition.
The transaction underscores the complexities involved when larger funds absorb positions from struggling competitors, balancing the acquisition of valuable assets against the need to manage near-term market volatility and unforeseen risks inherent in inheriting another fund's portfolio.
