According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal-fired power plants are expected to produce 10,974 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2026, accounting for nearly one-third of total global output estimated at 33,313 TWh. This substantial output underscores the persistent reliance on coal even as nations accelerate wind and solar installations at record pace.
The gap between coal and other energy sources remains striking. Natural gas ranks as a distant second at 6,976 TWh, while hydropower contributes 4,536 TWh. Renewable sources, though expanding rapidly, still trail significantly: solar is projected to generate 3,289 TWh and wind 2,898 TWh. Nuclear power rounds out major sources with 2,871 TWh of generation, according to IEA projections.
The dominance of coal reflects the infrastructure and investment patterns embedded in the global energy system, where coal-fired plants remain cost-competitive and widely utilized across developed and emerging economies alike.
