Distillate Inventories Decline as Crude Oil Stocks Remain Flat

U.S. crude inventories fell modestly while distillate stocks continue their downward trend, according to API data.

According to the American Petroleum Institute, U.S. crude oil inventories declined by 328,000 barrels during the week ending August 14, marking a reversal from the prior week when stockpiles grew by 9.072 million barrels. The earlier accumulation was driven by a combination of elevated imports, reduced exports, and contributions from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The modest recent decline reflects continued pressure on overall energy supplies amid shifting domestic demand patterns.

Commercial crude oil inventories, excluding SPR contributions, have contracted substantially by just over 49 million barrels over the preceding eighteen-week period. However, when measured on a year-to-date basis, U.S. crude inventories remain elevated at 1.88 million barrels above year-ago levels, suggesting the market has struggled to return to normal inventory balances despite recent drawdowns. Distillate stocks have experienced steeper declines, underscoring divergent trends across different petroleum products as refiners navigate fluctuating demand conditions and production schedules.
