According to Utility Dive, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved acquisitions of gas-fired power plants by two major energy firms. PowerTransitions has secured approval to acquire a 1.2-gigawatt power generation facility in New York, which the company plans to develop as part of a broader energy campus initiative to expand its generation portfolio in the Northeast.
TransAlta, meanwhile, received clearance to purchase two natural gas-fueled power plants in Colorado with a combined capacity of approximately 319 megawatts. The acquisitions represent the companies' respective strategies to secure dispatchable generation assets amid the ongoing evolution of the electricity sector.
The FERC approvals signal regulatory support for these infrastructure transactions as utilities and independent power producers seek to position themselves for grid reliability and market opportunities. Both deals add to the country's existing inventory of natural gas generation capacity.
