Lithium Prices Fall to Five-Month Lows as Supply Concerns Mount

Lithium prices plummeted to five-month lows on concerns over rising global supply capacity as mines restart and expand operations.

Lithium prices have declined sharply to their lowest levels in five months as producers worldwide accelerate capacity returns and expansions, raising concerns about potential market oversupply. According to market data, lithium carbonate contracts on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange—the most actively traded lithium contract globally—fell to 136,800 yuan (approximately $20,210) per tonne on Wednesday, representing a roughly 30% decline from multi-year highs achieved in mid-May.

The downturn reflects a wave of mine restarts and capacity expansions across major producing regions, particularly in China and Australia. The return of previously sidelined mining capacity has prompted investors and market analysts to reassess supply-demand dynamics in an industry critical to the global electric vehicle and battery sectors.

The pricing pressure comes as lithium demand continues to be shaped by broader trends in battery production and EV adoption. Industry participants are closely monitoring whether the expansion in supply will align with demand growth or if oversupply conditions will persist and further pressure prices in coming months.
