Nebraska Utility Deploys Zinc Battery for Capitol Microgrid

Lincoln Electric System commissioned a 3-MW zinc-based battery system to provide backup power for Nebraska's Capitol complex and essential infrastructure.

Lincoln Electric System has activated a 3-megawatt, 12-megawatt-hour zinc-based battery system designed to enhance energy resilience at Nebraska's state Capitol complex and other critical infrastructure facilities. The non-lithium storage solution represents a growing trend among utilities seeking alternative battery chemistries to diversify their energy storage portfolios.

According to Utility Dive, the zinc battery deployment supports broader microgrid operations across a 30-megawatt system, providing backup power capacity and grid stabilization capabilities. Zinc-based batteries offer several advantages over traditional lithium-ion systems, including lower fire risk, improved thermal stability, and potential cost advantages at scale.

The project underscores utilities' expanding focus on energy independence and resilience amid aging grid infrastructure and increasing demand for reliable backup power systems. As utilities evaluate energy storage options beyond lithium chemistry, technologies like zinc batteries are gaining traction for mission-critical applications requiring long-duration storage and dependable performance.
