PJM May Tighten Reliability Rules After Record Data Center Outage

Grid operator PJM is exploring stricter reliability standards following a major July outage that knocked 3.8 GW of data center load offline.

The PJM Interconnection is evaluating new "ride-through" reliability standards in response to a significant outage on July 22 that forced data centers in Northern Virginia offline, marking the largest such event in the grid operator's history, according to PJM officials.

The incident has prompted PJM to assess whether existing grid reliability requirements adequately protect against cascading failures involving large computational loads, particularly those concentrated in data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations that have grown substantially across the region.

The move reflects broader industry concern about grid stability as data-intensive facilities expand their footprint within PJM's service territory, potentially requiring enhanced protocols to ensure critical infrastructure can withstand localized electrical disruptions without triggering widespread outages.
