U.S. Crude Inventories Rise as SPR Approaches Operational Floor

U.S. crude stockpiles jumped by 4.2 million barrels while strategic reserves hit their lowest levels in decades.

According to the American Petroleum Institute, crude oil inventories in the United States climbed by 4.2 million barrels in the week ending August 21, exceeding analyst expectations of a 1.9 million-barrel increase. The larger-than-anticipated buildup signals a shift in market dynamics after the prior week saw a modest 328,000-barrel decline in stockpiles.

The accumulation comes as the Strategic Petroleum Reserve approaches its operational minimum, having undergone substantial drawdowns over recent months. Commercial crude inventories, excluding SPR supplies, have contracted by just over 45 million barrels over the past nineteen weeks, according to API data. Despite these commercial drawdowns, year-to-date U.S. crude inventories remain up 5.8 million barrels, as government releases have failed to fully offset the broader inventory buildup.

The convergence of rising commercial stockpiles and diminishing SPR reserves presents a critical juncture for U.S. energy policy, as policymakers weigh the balance between stabilizing prices and maintaining adequate emergency reserves for national security purposes.
