Utah Launches Long-Term Enhanced Geothermal System Test

A major research initiative in Utah is examining critical variables needed to make enhanced geothermal energy commercially viable over the long term.

Researchers in Utah have initiated a comprehensive long-term test focused on enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), an emerging renewable energy technology. According to the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy, the project will evaluate the unknown variables critical to maintaining commercially sustainable EGS production operations over extended periods.

The research effort, led by principal investigator Kristie McLin, addresses a key challenge facing the geothermal industry: understanding how to optimize and maintain EGS performance while ensuring economic viability. Enhanced geothermal systems represent a promising pathway for expanding geothermal energy capacity beyond regions with traditional high-heat resources, potentially unlocking new opportunities for renewable energy development across broader geographic areas.
