Since launching six years ago, Bookshop.org has returned nearly $47 million to independent bookstores, while American Booksellers Association membership has grown from 1,900 to 3,200 stores. Independent Bookstore Day, celebrated annually on the last Saturday in April, serves as a critical financial lifeline during slower periods, when bookstores—described as "high-love, low-margin businesses"—need extra support to sustain operations.
