Renewable Energy and Storage Could Supply One-Third of US Industrial Heat

A UC Berkeley analysis finds renewable energy and storage systems could meet approximately one-third of U.S. industrial heat demand.

According to research from UC Berkeley, renewable energy sources combined with battery and thermal storage systems have the potential to supply roughly one-third of the industrial heat demand across the United States. The findings suggest a meaningful pathway for manufacturers to reduce their dependence on natural gas, which has become increasingly volatile in pricing and supply.

For industrial sectors heavily reliant on natural gas for heat generation, the implications could be substantial. Jose Dominguez, one of the report's authors, noted that manufacturers facing unpredictable energy costs could benefit significantly from transitioning to renewables-based solutions. The analysis underscores how energy storage technologies—both thermal and electrical—play a critical role in making renewable heat viable at scale.

The research signals growing opportunities for industrial decarbonization while addressing cost pressures. As manufacturing facilities explore energy transition strategies, the viability of renewables and storage for meeting heat requirements offers a practical alternative to continued reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.
