Solar Panel Costs Collapse 90% in 15 Years

Solar energy has emerged as the world's fastest-growing power source, driven by dramatic cost reductions that have eliminated reliance on subsidies.

Solar power has established itself as the world's most rapidly expanding energy source, surpassing all other forms of electricity generation globally in 2025. The sector's extraordinary growth trajectory continues despite recent policy headwinds in the United States, the world's largest economy, which has signaled a political shift away from renewable energy initiatives. Yet these domestic policy changes have done little to slow solar's expansion, as the technology has fundamentally transformed the global energy landscape.

According to OilPrice, the transformation has been driven by a dramatic decline in solar panel costs—prices have fallen approximately 90 percent over the past 15 years. This unprecedented price collapse has rendered subsidies largely unnecessary, positioning solar as an economically competitive energy source in its own right. The dramatic reduction in manufacturing and installation costs has enabled solar power to compete directly with conventional energy sources without government support.

The combination of cost efficiency and rapid deployment capability has created a compelling case for further expansion. Solar energy now provides what industry experts describe as a readily available, affordable electricity source that can be constructed quickly across diverse geographies and climates. As the sector continues to demonstrate its economic viability, solar installations are expected to maintain their record-breaking growth trajectory globally.
