Nashville Public Radio has gained national recognition for its in-depth reporting on higher education funding in Tennessee. According to WPLN, the station's one-hour special 'The Debt: What Tennessee Owes Its HBCUs' received a Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, one of the industry's most respected honors for journalism.
The project, co-produced by WPLN's Camellia Burris and contributor Emily Siner, was acknowledged at the NABJ's national convention in Atlanta on August 15. The award underscores Nashville's growing reputation as a hub for substantive investigative journalism and educational reporting that examines policy issues affecting the region's institutions.
The recognition reflects WPLN's commitment to covering stories with local significance and national implications. For Nashville business leaders and educators, the award highlights the importance of media scrutiny in examining how public resources are allocated to institutions that serve the community, particularly those with deep historical roots in Tennessee.
